Rick & Kristi's Site

Anyone who knows me, knows I love elephants.  So, I decided to dedicate a page to this wonderful animal.

The Cleveland Zoo's elephants (Moshi, Martika and Joe) have been moved to the Columbus Zoo until the "African Elephant Crossing" is completed in 2011. The elephants did not go alone, two of their trainers are accompanying them in Columbus.

I went to The Cleveland Museum on Natural History's exhibition, Elephants! I actually got to touch elephant skin.  It was a big thrill for me.  Rick waited patiently for me.

Quick Physical Statistics:

  • Elephants typically reach puberty at thirteen or fourteen years of age
  • They have offspring up until they are around fifty years old
  • They may live seventy years or possibly more
  • A cow produces a single calf and in very rare cases twins
  • The interval between births is between two and a half to four years
  • An elephant's trunk, a union of the nose and upper lip, is a highly sensitive organ with over 100,000 muscle units.

 Elephant Links:

Elephant Information Repository - This wonderful site includes news, information, conservation, history and anatomy, book lists, sounds, pictures and links to other sites.
I highly recommend this site!

The Elephant Sanctuary - They loaded up their trunks and they moved to Tennessee.

Save the Elephants - Founded by Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, a pioneering researcher of elephant behavior, this organization "approaches conservation from an elephant's perspective."  Lots of information for educators and activists.

National Zoo Amazing Updating Elephant Cam - Watch the elephants at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.  We visit these elephants whenever we go to D.C.  They have a training session every day at 11:00 AM.  It's amazing to see what the elephants can do.  I visit this site daily.

Please don't buy anything ivory.  If you travel to exotic places, or even the shopping mall, don't buy anything that looks like ivory because it probably is ivory.  Save an elephant - say NO to ivory!
